During the first couple of hours on Halloween night, I typically take the kids around our own neighborhood to meet up with friends and trick-or-treat at neighbors' homes. But, later on--if we still have the energy--we head out to McDonald Ave. in Santa Rosa (Map) for the big event.
Locals know that this is THE place to go trick-or-treating on Halloween Eve. The folks here go all-out to make this a special happening. In the past, neighbors have put on outdoor skits featuring the shower scene in psycho, a mostly improvised Vampire Training Seminar, a “casino” in which kids could bet with candy, and lots of outlandish decorations—not to mention mounds of candy. As an added spooky bonus, you can see the house used in Wes Craven’s film Scream as well as the house used for Hitchcock’s chilling thriller Shadow of a Doubt, both on McDonald Ave.
