| Earth Day Celebrations in Sonoma County, 2008Earth Day is coming on Tuesday, April 22, 2008. And, for being such a Green community, its surprising that Sonoma County doesnt have a large, established Earth Day event. Granted, there are many, nice, smaller celebrations throughout the county. But there is no one, big, free (or inexpensive) gathering spot that you can count on each year.
Perhaps that might be changing this year as the town of Windsor announces its first annual Earth Day event on Sunday the 20th. The Windsor Town Green is becoming the go-to spot for many family-friendly, community celebrations. For example, early next month, The Green will also be the site of the First Annual Bluegrass Festival on May 3, and then the Cinco de Mayo celebration on the 5th.
Here are some of the Earth Day celebrations taking place throughout the area:
- April 19: Beach Clean Up
Beach and river cleanup at Sonoma Coast State Beach, to collect debris that washes up on north Jenner beach. 9am.
- April 19: Celebrate Earth Day at Quarryhill
This beautiful 20-acre secret hideaway in Glen Ellen, is home to a variety of rare Asian plants. In honor of Earth Day, the garden is open for free and staff and volunteers will be on hand to lead tours and answer questions. 10am 2pm.
- April 19: "Art for Awareness" Earth Day Chinese Artists Exhibition
This special juried show, featuring paintings by Bay Area Chinese artists, is promoting environmental awareness and social change through the arts. Sundays activities will also include live music, a reception with the artists, and a benefit raffle. Free, at Wildwood Farm in Kenwood. 1 5pm.
- April 19: Earth Festival
Puppets, magician, Safari West animals, marching band, and more in Sebastopol. 11am 11pm.
- April 19: Earth Day Luncheon and Green Tour
Join Michel-Schlumberger wines in Dry Creek Valley for a tour of their eco-friendly Estate and learn about their organic garden, abundant wildlife, Wine Creek restoration, sustainable winegrowing and more. You'll be treated to a special sheep herding demonstration organized by Canvas Ranch. Finally you'll sit down to a luncheon under a 300 year old oak tree and enjoy a wine-paired family style meal prepared only with organic, locally sourced produce. 11:30am - 2:30pm. $65.
- April 20: Santa Rosa Creek Clean Up
Help clean up Santa Rosa Creek, enhance wildlife habitat, and nurture native plants. The restored creek flows through the heart of downtown providing a home for river otter, kingfishers, egrets, and steelhead trout as well as recreation along the six mile creek trail. This is a great event for kids and families. 9am to noon at the Olive Park footbridge near the Vineyard Creek Hotel on West 3rd St., (707) 543-3845
- April 20: Earth Elders Celebration
Join special guest State Senator Pat Wiggins and enjoy music by the Kokopelli Players, Raging Grannies and the Solstice singers, plus poetry by Shepherd Bliss. Sebastopol. 1-5pm.
- April 20: Celebrate Earth Day in Green Valley
Tastings of Green Valley wines; keynote speaker Gil Grosvenor, chairman of National Geographic, a green market showcasing select products, reggae band, more. Benefits the Laguna de Santa Rosa Foundation, National Geographic Society, Solar Living Institute, and The Leakey Foundation. 1 4pm; $50
- April 20: Earth Day on the Green
The Town of Windsor invites you to its First Annual Earth Day on the Green with a free celebration, planned to appeal to adults and children alike with family games, youth craft activities, entertainment and food. The days program includes: Windsor Farmers Market; A childrens environmentally themed art show; Games, vendors, food and crafts; Inter-active educational activities; Two concerts by ZunZun (12:15 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.), a performing arts group that celebrates the environments and cultures of the Americas through music; Local non-profit and for-profit organizations will promote environmental awareness by showcasing environmentally sound products and services with informational booths and interactive activities; Ride your bike and take advantage of the free, secure bicycle parking provided at the "Bike Corral," courtesy of the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition; Recycle bins will be available for the public to recycle fluorescent light bulbs, ink jet cartridges, and batteries. Free. 11am 3pm.
