Earth Day is coming on Tuesday, April 22, 2008. And, for being such a Green community, it’s surprising that Sonoma County doesn’t have a large, established Earth Day event. Granted, there are many, nice, smaller celebrations throughout the county. But there is no one, big, free (or inexpensive) gathering spot that you can count on each year.

Perhaps that might be changing this year as the town of Windsor announces its first annual Earth Day event on Sunday the 20th. The Windsor Town Green is becoming the go-to spot for many family-friendly, community celebrations. For example, early next month, The Green will also be the site of the First Annual Bluegrass Festival on May 3, and then the Cinco de Mayo celebration on the 5th.

Here are some of the Earth Day celebrations taking place throughout the area:

  • April 19: Beach Clean Up
Beach and river cleanup at Sonoma Coast State Beach, to collect debris that washes up on north Jenner beach. 9am.

  • April 19: Celebrate Earth Day at Quarryhill
This beautiful 20-acre “secret” hideaway in Glen Ellen, is home to a variety of rare Asian plants. In honor of Earth Day, the garden is open for free and staff and volunteers will be on hand to lead tours and answer questions. 10am – 2pm.

  • April 19: "Art for Awareness" Earth Day Chinese Artists Exhibition
This special juried show, featuring paintings by Bay Area Chinese artists, is promoting environmental awareness and social change through the arts. Sunday’s activities will also include live music, a reception with the artists, and a benefit raffle. Free, at Wildwood Farm in Kenwood. 1 – 5pm.

  • April 19: Earth Festival
Puppets, magician, Safari West animals, marching band, and more in Sebastopol. 11am – 11pm.

  • April 19: Earth Day Luncheon and Green Tour
Join Michel-Schlumberger wines in Dry Creek Valley for a tour of their eco-friendly Estate and learn about their organic garden, abundant wildlife, Wine Creek restoration, sustainable winegrowing and more. You'll be treated to a special sheep herding demonstration organized by Canvas Ranch. Finally you'll sit down to a luncheon under a 300 year old oak tree and enjoy a wine-paired family style meal prepared only with organic, locally sourced produce. 11:30am - 2:30pm. $65.

  • April 20: Santa Rosa Creek Clean Up
Help clean up Santa Rosa Creek, enhance wildlife habitat, and nurture native plants. The restored creek flows through the heart of downtown providing a home for river otter, kingfishers, egrets, and steelhead trout as well as recreation along the six mile creek trail. This is a great event for kids and families. 9am to noon at the Olive Park footbridge near the Vineyard Creek Hotel on West 3rd St., (707) 543-3845
