Overview of Northeast Santa Rosa

From , former About.com Guide

The Northeast quadrant of Santa Rosa is the area that falls north of 4th St. and east of Hwy. 101 See map Note that 4th St. turns into Sonoma Hwy. (also called Hwy. 12), east of Farmers Ln.

This section of town is best known for having many of the city’s oldest, most established neighborhoods. Some of these neighborhoods are:

  • McDonald Historic District features beautiful turn-of-the-century mansions along wide, tree-lined streets. Several movies have been filmed along McDonald Ave, including Shadow of a Doubt, Alfred Hitchcock’s personal favorite of all his films, plus Wes Craven’s Scream, My Three Sons, Pollyanna and more.

  • St.Rose Historic District: This area, which grew around the St. Rose Church, a Gothic Revival stone structure, was one of Santa Rosa’s most prestigious neighborhoods. It now includes seven of the city’s most distinguished, surviving nineteenth century homes.

  • Cherry Street Preservation District There are 90 designated properties within this district, which contains the highest concentration of 19th century buildings in Santa Rosa.

  • The JC Area, located close the Junior College, is known as a more urban and “artsy” neighborhood.

  • Other well-known neighborhoods in this quadrant include the new view homes of Fountaingrove as well as those of Alta Vista. (This area is sometimes called Flamingo Hill, due to its proximity to the Flamingo Hotel.) Toward the east are the Rincon Valley and Skyhawk neighborhoods.
